The project:
Abplas recently embarked on a project to print 340 polycarbonate hexagons. The hexagons were to be used on The Southbank as part of their summer display.
Quick turnaround
We were contacted by our client, Hyper Creative, who gave us a deadline of one week to print 340 polycarbonate hexagons. On top of this tight time frame each hexagon was to be produced with a colour fade within the colour scheme, rather than printing one solid colour. Our direct media printer enables us to colour match and create a range of effects, depending on the surface we chose to print on. So this wasn’t a problem.
Suitable Materials
The hexagons for this job needed to be light enough to be suspended in the air. However, they also needed to survive all weather conditions as they were to be exhibited outside on London’s Southbank. For this job we used 3mm Palsun Clear Polycarbonate UV Protected from Perspex alongside Mimaki LUS – 150 High Adhesion UV ink. The ink was applied to the reverse face of each hexagon. Both the ink and the polycarbonate material were perfect for this purpose.
Stunning effect
This clip shows how we printed the hexagons using our Mimaki Flat Bed Printer. The final frame shows the hexagons on display outside The Southbank Centre in London this summer during Jazz Re:Fest 2025.
Our client Hyper Creative was great to work with, here’s what they had to say about us…
“Working with Abplas was really a good experience. I had reached out to several companies and Abplas were very responsive and pricing was in line with my budget.
Also being in close proximity to London, where my job was being completed, also helped.
Matt, David and the team were really helpful providing photos and videos along the way to show progress.
This project has quite a tight deadline and the guys managed to deliver early, which was excellent
I would highly recommend this, really good to work with.”
