There are some environmental benefits of using acrylic…

At Abplas we are committed to evaluating the environmental impact of the plastics we use. We only use suppliers who have their own environmental and sustainability policies, and we continually try to improve and reduce environmental impacts. Acrylic is one type of plastic we regularly supply to our customers. We use acrylic frequently to fabricate with. We are keen to use acrylic as it has several environmental benefits. Some of the environmental benefits of using acrylics are as follows:

Insulation Properties

  • The thermal conductivity of acrylic is about one sixth of that of glass
  • In glazing applications, the heat loss through Perspex is around 8% less than glass

Acrylic is Non-Toxic

  • Non-toxic to aquatic organisms and inert in the environment
  • Suitable for food contact
  • No dioxins given off in a fire

Durability

  • Outstanding durability extends the life of many products
  • Longer lifespan means less frequent replacement

High Molecular Weight

  • Unrivaled weatherability
  • Good chemical resistance

Weight

  • Half the weight of glass
  • Lower transportation costs and therefore lower carbon dioxide emissions
  • Significant savings in structural support components when used in construction

Unrivalled weatherability

  • Good chemical resistance

Recycling

  • Acrylic is easy to reuse and recycle
  • PMMA (poly-methyl methacrylate can be readily recycled back to the original raw material ‘monomer’ – regardless of colour or aesthetic effect.

Moreover, we at Abplas, are dedicated to reducing waste, increasing efficiency and reusing and recycling plastics where ever possible. We will always try to get the maximum amount of usage out of each sheet of material thus producing as little waste as we can.

In addition to this, as part of our commitment to reducing the environmental impact of the plastics we supply, we offer free recycling of any acrylic or polycarbonate purchased from us. Most importantly, if you are looking for a product for short term use we will generally recommend you using acrylic or polycarbonate due to their recycling properties.

In conclusion, we work closely with Perspex Distribution Ltd and our other suppliers to make sure we are doing everything we can to ensure we are environmentally responsible. To read more about their environmental policy please click on the link below:

At Abplas we are always keen to hear about new recycled materials and regularly ask our suppliers for information about what they are doing to promote sustainability. We were very pleased to receive this recent publication from Perspex: https://www.perspex.co.uk/Perspex/media/General/technical-library/PDFs/PDL-Environmental-Brochure-LOW-RES.pdf
