When the London Function band approached us with their bespoke fabrication project we rose to the challenge. Their idea was to clad a metal frame with acrylic to transform it into a stage, as well as a functioning piano. We discussed the project with them and how we would achieve a the effect they were looking for.

The Materials we Used

Our team were able to advise which product would be best for the job. We recommended Perspex 10mm gloss white for the top and white solid gloss PVC for the sides. White PVC is more flexible with greater impact resistance and so, it can withstand being put under tension to adapt to the curved sides, without cracking if it is bashed. Although we made the top using 10mm Perspex, we added another 10mm lip all the way around the perimeter to give the effect of a 20mm piece. This reduced the weight by half, but meant it was still strong enough to support someone standing on top of it. This was due to the fact it had the significant metal structure underneath underpinning the whole thing. Perspex 10mm gloss has a greater scratch resistance surface than white gloss PVC and so was perfect for the top.

Many thanks to the London Function band for their testimonial of our work:

“We can’t recommend Abplas enough for the incredible job they did on our piano! From start to finish the customer service was perfect and the recommendations on what materials to use to, get the best results, were very helpful indeed. We are 100 percent coming back for another one in the new year as no one else compares” Nathan Watson
